Betsy may have been the preacher’s daughter but she was not a nice person.
It could have been because her mother died when she was young and her father spoiled her but it didn’t really matter, what mattered was that she finally realized that something needed to change. So Betsy left the little town on the Lehigh Canal to become a missionary. Unfortunately, Betsy was beaten and robbed when she arrived in New York to meet with the missionary board. God uses all things for good and this was no exception – He used her rescuer and healer to teach Betsy, through her work at the Salvation Army, to be the person He wanted her to be.
That all ends one fateful day when she is called home by the Board of Directors of her father’s church with an urgent message. He father has had a heart attack and is too weak to continue pastoring. He’s lost his health, his job, and his home. His home will go to the newly hired pastor — as soon as they find one.
My Thoughts
You know, I really enjoyed this book. The romance was a bit blah for me but I loved the struggle that Betsy had with herself – between the person she was and the person she’s trying to be.
