A Playbook for Winning at Life

Using basketball as an anology Coach Dru Joyce II takes us on a journey to become what Jesus Christ wants to see.
In Beyond Championships A Playbook for Winning at Life, we’ll see through real examples just how to live our lives on and off of the court. How to focus, how to serve, and most importantly how to use what He’s given us for the life He wants us to live.

Hott Review:

Last weekend I was sitting with my niece after her basketball game and told her that I kept getting lost because the scoreboard was broken. She rolled her eyes dramatically and responded with a huge sigh, “someone that that just because we’re learrrnnning that we can’t keep score”. I believe that though hearts are in the right place that this is condescending to children. Just like when we give participation trophies. It made me think back to a game the day before when I watch a much stronger team ask a younger team they were playing against to divide with them so that they were evenly matched. All of the kids had fun and learned something.

What I liked: As I picked up ‘Beyond Championships’ I realized that I’d read it before. I don’t know why I never reviewed it, but I had read it – and enjoyed it immensely.
This book is written like a conversation you don’t want to end. The stories and examples brought to life, even for someone who is clueless about basketball, by Coach Dru are absolutely mesmerizing. One of his many memorable quotes is:

“The mentors in our lives, however big or small their impact on us may be, are there to nourish us as humans, so that we can grow as individuals and truly become the most vital, strongest versions of ourselves imaginable.”

What I didn’t like: I wish that there were more coaches that could heed Coach’s example.

  1. This book looks really good. My 11 y.o. son is just now learning to play basketball and he is a big LeBron James fan. I think this book has a great message that you can use in life. I would love to read it and then share it with my son when he gets old enough to read it himself. Thanks for the giveaway, Gina.
