THEY CALL HIM THE DUKE OF MURDER…
The gossips whisper that the new Duke of Murdoch is a brute, a murderer, and even worse—a Scot. They say he should never be trusted alone with a woman. But Megan Windham sees in Hamish something different, someone different.
No one was fiercer at war than Hamish MacHugh, though now the soldier faces a whole new battlefield: a London Season. To make his sisters happy, he’ll take on any challenge—even letting their friend Miss Windham teach him to waltz. Megan isn’t the least bit intimidated by his dark reputation, but Hamish senses that she’s fighting battles of her own. For her, he’ll become the warrior once more, and for her, he might just lose his heart.
Hott Review:
The Trouble with Dukes isn’t your average Grace Burrows novel. It isn’t light and fun.
Sure, Megan and Hamish are terrific characters. They’re loving, interesting, and watching them fall in love is sweet.
But there’s a lot of baggage and the antagonist is irritating. Not that there is something wrong with the story, mind you, but, Hamish speaks frequently of the war and how awful it was. He’s quite honest with Meggie and while what he shares is never gory it is heart-breaking.
As for the antagonist, I utterly detested Sir Fletcher. Just seeing his name on the page made me angry. I’ve known people like him and the destruction and desolation they’ve caused has been worthy of a noose.
The show of family support and devotion in this book brought tears to my eyes several times. To me there is nothing more wonderful than a family that surrounds and supports even when they aren’t sure why, just that you need them.
The Trouble with Dukes is absolutely a book you’re going to want to read, but be forewarned it’s not sweet and light, it’s encompassing and emotional. It’s a book you’ll remember forever.
