But Doon has a dark underbelly as well. The two girls could have everything they’ve longed for…or they could end up breaking an enchantment and find themselves trapped in a world that has become a nightmare.
Hott Review:
I grabbed the Doon series as it went on sale sure that I’d love it. The romance, the adventure, the Christian fiction. But it wasn’t at all what I expected.
What I liked: Doon is an exciting fantasy romance that I enjoyed very much. The characters, the story, the imagery is all amazing. As you read through the pages you feel pulled from your mundane life to the shores of Scotland and then to the hills of Doon.
Even with the internal conflict and fear, there is a general feeling of good when you’re reading. Doon is a great novel of good vs evil, overcoming our pasts, and learning to become a person you respect. All in all, a great work.
What I didn’t like: I actually added the Doon series to my calendar because my daughter and nieces are outgrowing middle-grade fiction and moving onto YA and I’m searching for books that they’ll enjoy. My problem is that I’m very limited because I don’t prefer for them to read romances. I don’t want them to get the idea that romance is what life is about. I don’t want them waiting for a knight in shining armor to rescue them. I want them to fall for the man God chooses in His time, not to search blindly for something that may never appear.
Anyway… enough of my soapbox.
Doon isn’t the book for the girls, quite yet. While there’s nothing truly inappropriate or steamy in this adventure, there are some references and conversations our sheltered girls aren’t ready for.
