Being a single mother is an all consuming job.
Being a lock tender is an all consuming job. They work, usually non-stop, from 5 a.m. until sometimes as late as 9 p.m. six days a week.
Try to do both jobs.
No one knew how but Sarah was pulling it off, but pulling it off she was. Ever since her husband was crushed in the lock more than a year ago, Sarah has been maintaining both jobs. Of course, she has had help. Her mother-in-law has been living with Sarah and trying to help. Yet, it’s obvious that she’s loosing her vision and won’t be able to handle the kids much longer.
Sarah’s dream? To get her children away from the canal. She doesn’t want them to grow up without schooling, work dawn til dusk, nor be trapped in a life she fears. But how will she ever escape?
My Thoughts
Of the three books this one, to me at least, was the least interesting yet, I felt the most compassion for Sarah.
What I liked: I enjoyed entering into the town of Walnutport once again. I loved seeing how the residents have grown and changed.
What I didn’t like: I didn’t find the book enthralling. It was okay.
