Hott Review:

Dessert in the Desert is a difficult book to review.

Let me start by saying, it was nothing like I expected. I don’t know why, but I expected more than one short parable with a bunch of teaching materials and duplications tossed in. You may be wondering how, I managed that considering that’s what the synopsis says it is, but I don’t read a book’s synopsis before writing my review. I don’t want it to color my feelings toward the book, nor provide any spoilers.

Did I enjoy Dessert in the Desert? Yes, unequivocally. It’s a great parable. The story is unique and interesting. It would be something perfect to share during a youth group session.

Why is this difficult to review? Honestly. I was confused. When I reached the end of the parable I was only about 20% into the book, so first I wondered what else was there. What follows was what confused me.

First there was a list of each name/title and what they symbolized.
Next, there were Fun Facts that explained the double meanings and symbolism throughout the parable.
Then we have some terrific discussion questions.
Next the story is retold with the biblical references noted.
Then the symbolism and fun facts again. There may be slight changes but it seemed the same to me.
Then the parables from the Bible are included.
Next is a skit, which does look like fun, but I wasn’t in the mood since I’d been confused.

Two things I will say, though.

  1. Absolutely read and share Dessert in the Desert. It’s a great picture of skepticism and the fight against becoming a child of God. Second, I’d suggest this as a great tool to share with your youth groups, but only middle and high schoolers will truly feel it’s impact.
  2. Visit Mr Johnnson’s website, christianparables.com, there is so much information and so many helpful tools there you’ll wonder how you ever managed without it!

Jwyan C. Johnson“If we don’t change our absence of mind, then we don’t mind our absence of change.” – Jwyan C. Johnson

Years ago, bestselling author Jwyan C. Johnson wrote the script to a cartoon. The story starts off with a police chase to a giant dictionary: the home of our vocabulary words. Cops break down the cover, and they all rush in with their weapons drawn. And as they move around inside this book, we learn that they’re looking for one specific word: a simple 9-lettered noun. It has been bragging about its countless offenses committed against our society, against mankind. Surprising unarmed, and not dangerous, this specific word simply turns us against each other.

Detectives follow the “alphabetical” directions to the right page, the right column and the right row, only to discover that this word has disappeared! Nowadays this divisive word lives inside our minds if we let it! The accomplished mystery writer reveals that “ignorance” was the word the police were after.

The creative writings of Jwyan C. Johnson aim to biblically “protect and serve” the mind state because “ignorance is still at large in our society!” And with his latest kingdom-seeking contribution, Christian Parables, there are some places where ignorance no longer resides so we can win back each other.
