Review | Secrets at Silver Pines Inn

by | Nov 1, 2017 | 2017, Ages 4-8, Ages 9-12, eBook, Nada

A secret room. A secret stash. A secret hope.

Nick likes secrets and he’s good at figuring out puzzles. He’s sure he’ll find a treasure soon, so Grandfather’s inn can stay open, and . . . maybe he and his family could live there too.

He discovers a box with historic old Notes and follows its clues to the cipher-symbols on an ancient sampler. He meets a wonderful coonhound who might become his pal. So far, so good! All he has to do now is explore those ruins in the woods with his new friend, Beckly—and dig out the treasure. But things get scary when the clues lead nowhere, and Mom can’t get well, and someone sets fire to a guest cabin.

Wait! What about the verse he read in one of the Notes: “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” Trust God? How does that work, anyway? Maybe he’d better find out.

Hott Review:

What a great book!
What I liked: I’m always looking for books to share with my nieces and nephews and am happy to convey Secrets at Silver Pines Inn will be on the gift list this Christmas!

I really liked this clever mystery. Secrets at Silver Pines Inn is a terrific book for young Christians who love mysteries. It was great to follow Nick on his quest to find a way to keep his family’s inn while still keeping up with his chores and trying to let his worries consume him. I liked the tamer nature of the culprits and how Nick was set on solving not only a historic mystery, but also a current one!

What I didn’t like: There were a couple of times that it felt like I missed part of a conversation, even after reading it a few times. I’m not sure if it was an eBook issue or an editing issue.

Author Bio:

Gloria ReppAdventure, mystery, and wild creatures all play a part in Gloria Repp’s many books. She grew up in the Hawaiian Islands and the Pacific Northwest, and it was there she learned a love for wilderness that pervades her stories. Over the years, her experiences gained from raising three children, teaching school, and editing have made useful contributions to her work. Gloria often finds intriguing details for her books when she explores the forests of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. As she wrote this story, which reaches back to Revolutionary War days, she drew inspiration from the mysterious tumbled ruins that lie beneath the pines.

I love to read! But I don't always think the synopsis on the backs of books do them justice. I do, however, believe all books should come with an intended rating - or at least a steam FYI. So, I'm taking upon myself to educate all -- christian & secular readers, alike -- on the books behind the synopsis and the possible things you may not want your YA reader to see. Enjoy!
