Spelled The Storymakers 1 by Betsy Schow

amazon barnes & noble Goodreads

Fairy Tale Survival Rule #32: If you find yourself at the mercy of a wicked witch, sing a romantic ballad and wait for your Prince Charming to save the day.

Yeah, no thanks. Dorthea is completely princed out. Sure being the crown princess of Emerald has its perks—like Glenda Original ball gowns and Hans Christian Louboutin heels. But a forced marriage to the brooding prince Kato is so not what Dorthea had in mind for her enchanted future.

Talk about unhappily ever after.

Trying to fix her prince problem by wishing on a (cursed) star royally backfires, leaving the kingdom in chaos and her parents stuck in some place called “Kansas.” Now it’s up to Dorthea and her pixed off prince to find the mysterious Wizard of Oz and undo the curse…before it releases the wickedest witch of all and spells The End for the world of Story.

Hott Review:

What I liked:I really enjoyed reading Spelled. This was a fun change from my usual reading.

Spelled is a fun combination of fairy tales and nursery rhymes that brings together the fun and the scary in a whirlwind adventure that will appeal to all ages! I loved watching the growth of the characters and the scrapes their poor choices landed them in.

What I didn’t like: There is a lot of ‘cursing’ in Spelled. True they’re Fairy Tale curse words but they’re slang euphemisms and something some parents, especially of younger readers, may prefer remain out of their children’s hands.

Truthfully the thing I disliked most about Spelled is the promo. It gives too much away. Most of what’s in there we don’t find out in the book until more than halfway through and it’s just more fun without knowing… which I did. I read the clip when I bought it but it took me so long to read Spelled that I’d forgotten. So, I was oblivious when I picked it up and I loved going in blindfolded.

Author Bio:

Betsy SchowBETSY SCHOW is the TODAY Show featured author of the non-fiction book, Finished Being Fat; however she’s been mixing up real life and fantasy for as long as she can remember. If someone were to ask about her rundown truck, she’s 100% positive that mechanical gremlins muck up her engine. And the only reason her house is dirty is because the dust bunnies have gone on strike. She lives in Utah with her own knight in geeky armor and their two princesses (that can totally shapeshift into little beasts). When not writing or talking to folks about “finishing”, Betsy works as a Co-Association Director for Odyssey of the Mind, an international program that helps teach kids problem solving and creative thinking (or how to turn their toasters into robots).

Her debut novel, Spelled, came out June 2015 from Sourcebooks and is the first book in the Storymaker Series. She is represented by Michelle Witte, Mansion Street Literary Agency.

I love to read! But I don't always think the synopsis on the backs of books do them justice. I do, however, believe all books should come with an intended rating - or at least a steam FYI. So, I'm taking upon myself to educate all -- christian & secular readers, alike -- on the books behind the synopsis and the possible things you may not want your YA reader to see. Enjoy!

It was a stab in the dark. On a chilly February night, during a screening of Psycho in midtown, someone sunk an ice pick into the back of Chanel Rylan’s neck, then disappeared quietly into the crowds of drunks and tourists in Times Square. To Chanel’s best friend, who...
