Searching for her kidnapped father leads Brenna McFerren Jefferson to the terrorists’ elusive “Death of Government” headquarters, known as The Doghouse. But nosing around where the federal government won’t investigate puts a target on her family and sets in motion a rebellion she isn’t prepared to lead.
Dreams of liberty cause the Senator’s daughter to disguise herself for undercover recon, recruit a high-ranking defector, and partner with a subversive news agency that combats government propaganda. As Brenna’s strength and family ties are tested, she unites a political party that commands the power to transform the United States.
Hott Interview:
I’m so blessed to have Kelley Rose Waller visit with us today. I just heard about her book The Senator’s Youngest Daughter and am insanely interested.
The Senator’s Daughter looks like an amazing book. I have to admit to being curious about how you managed to pull together what appears to be a thriller, a political novel, and a YA but still keep it Christian oriented.
Being a follower of Jesus is everything to me. It doesn’t shape my life on Sunday morning, but daily and in everything. Writing about politics happened by accident; I’m not normally a news junkie! The story’s suspense comes from the family survival and the protagonist’s learning to believe in herself more than the external power struggle. The political scene is really just that — the setting. Whether we like it or not, politics have a great influence in our country because elected officials and celebrities (often, one and the same) speak so often into cultural and social arenas such as sexuality, that we cannot escape every topic becoming politicized. There is a “right” and a “wrong” to every comment, every Facebook post, and every T-shirt slogan. Too often, Christians find ourselves on the “wrong” side of what is popular, but the good news is that “we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.”
How would you like The Senator’s Daughter to impact it’s readers as we prepare to inaugurate the next winners into their respective offices?
I hope people recognize the ability of each individual to make a difference. Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump will not be with you at the grocery store, in church, at the park, or at the gym. Your everyday life is far more dramatically impacted by your attitude and the intimate relationships around you than by world politics. However, the world we are leaving for our children is molded by leaders. I hope readers of The Senator’s Youngest Daughter see that the decisions we make in today’s elections will determine the policies our government puts into place for the future. If we let the media shape and cloud our thinking, their agenda will impact future generations in devastating ways, setting America up for the much-dreaded but oft-imagined dystopian future. Just as it was fifty years ago, whatever is pushing boundaries today will be acceptable and applauded by the next generation.
Do you plan to bring us more Christian Adventures? Will it be a part of a series or something completely different?
Yes, I am almost finished with a second novel, but it is unrelated and not in a political setting. It’s about late-term pregnancy loss, something close to my heart after we lost a daughter at 32 weeks gestation. In the time years since her passing, I’ve learned a great deal about myself and about God. My hope is to be able to present the emotions of my personal experience for others through one woman’s fictional story. I have personally found books on the topic to be either too hopeless/atheistic or too saccharine (“God makes everything better, poof!”). My attempt is to communicate how faith makes loss bearable and meaningful, but not easy. It has been difficult but also very cathartic to write. Bringing up feelings associated with the loss of our daughter is shattering, but it’s been amazing for me to look back at these five years and see how God has worked transformationally in my life and that of my family.
Wow! Thanks so much for visiting Kelley. I so appreciate the time you spent with us to get the word out about your novel. I can’t want to read it!
