Seriously?! You’re Condemning Me?

So, the other day a friend and I were talking about a recent Facebook post that backed up the post: You’ll Gladly Die for Your Children; Why Won’t You Cook for Them?. We were both frustrated and irritated.

First, we both agree wholeheartedly that the eating habits we teach our children now will stay with them their entire lives. Everything we do as parents will stay with our children. Not only that but it will also reflect on our grandchildren. We get it.

Second, we get that they are what they eat. Our children’s bodies grow from the food and nutrition that we as parents provide. Feeding them unhealthy foods and preservatives won’t do them any good in the long run.

We don’t even necessarily disagree with his main points that
– We need to take away the food industry’s upper hand in the supermarkets.
– We need to bring back home economics.
– We need to denormalize the reliance on convenience when it comes to feeding our children.

HOWEVER…

There is a lot more to this than just the basics.

First — When my kids were little and I didn’t work full-time I absolutely was all over the homemade foods. It’s just not quite as feasible now that I have two teenagers and hubby coaches.

Second — I have picky eaters and choose my battles. Sometimes, I’m perfectly content to just hand them a protein bar and a handful of vitamins because I don’t have the energy to battle with them. Plus, my younger teen barely eats & I’ll do about anything to get something healthy in his system!

Third — Really?!?! I know how to do the homemade cooking thing because our families were farmers & let me tell you — it’s not ALL that much healthier! Sure, Grams picked lettuce and ate it for dinner, but it was covered in bacon grease. Sure we were constantly in the garden growing and butchering our own food but were the livers, gizzards, and brains healthier than the boneless skinless chicken breast we’re eating now?

Yes, I agree that many are too dependant on their daily fast food fixes but an occasional fast food meal or box of Hamburger Helper isn’t going to kill anyone. Just making sure your family has ONE healthy meal each week would be a great start for most families!!

I love to read! But I don't always think the synopsis on the backs of books do them justice. I do, however, believe all books should come with an intended rating - or at least a steam FYI. So, I'm taking upon myself to educate all -- christian & secular readers, alike -- on the books behind the synopsis and the possible things you may not want your YA reader to see. Enjoy!
