Inside the Author: Mary Nealy

Not very long ago I got to read Ten Plagues by Mary Nealy. It was one of my favorite books for 2011 and I couldn’t help but to wonder what on earth made a Christian Romance Sensation like Mary Connealy move over to the dark side. Well, I had an unreal opportunity to ask and thought I’d share our conversation:

1. What inspired you to take this foray into an inspirational thriller/mystery?

I wrote for ten years before I got my first book published. And I had twenty finished books on my computer when I received my first contract. Those books were mainly all romance but within that frame I wrote in all genres. And that included contemporary romantic suspense. I decided at some point in those ten years that if no one would publish my books, I’d just write to entertain myself, so I wrote whatever I wanted that sounded fun. I love writing the cowboys and hope to always get to do that, but changing genres, sweet, suspenseful, contemporary, police procedurals, cozy mysteries, really energizes me and I love doing it.

2. What is your favorite aspect of working in this different genre?

I just have stories in my head that I want to tell and some of them are not a fit for historical westerns. So it’s fun to just go nuts and tell a different kind of story once in a while. And I find that after I’ve gone off in a new direction, it brings creative energy to the romantic comedy with cowboys.

3. What was the motivation behind your choice of the ten plagues?

I was reading about the gifts of the spirit and they were all really familiar. Knowledge, Wisdom, Prophecy, Faith, Healings, Miracles, Discerning of Spirits, Tongues, Interpretation of Tongues.
Except I noticed ‘discerning of spirits’. And I wondered about that. I’d never heard of anyone who had that gift. I’d heard of all the others many times. So I started to think about that one rarely referenced gift and wondered what it would be like to have it. What if a person could go up to someone and sense an evil spirit? Out of that came my heroine in Ten Plagues, a lady cop with the gift of discerning spirits who is at a crime scene and senses an evil unlike any she’d ever known. I needed a truly ugly, demonic evil and the serial killer was born.

4. Can we expect more books from Mary Nealy? (Hopefully, you can let us know if you’re working on a new book or adding to a series??)

I have six finished romantic suspense books on my computer and I’d love to sell them to someone. If Ten Plagues goes well maybe we’ll see some more Mary Nealy books.

Where can people find you on the internet?

My Website
Seekerville
Petticoats & Pistols

Also you can find me at Mary Connealy But I’m kind of a different person there. All very mysterious.

Well, thank you so very much for stopping by and letting us learn more about your new writing and pen name!! I can’t wait to read more!!

I love to read! But I don't always think the synopsis on the backs of books do them justice. I do, however, believe all books should come with an intended rating - or at least a steam FYI. So, I'm taking upon myself to educate all -- christian & secular readers, alike -- on the books behind the synopsis and the possible things you may not want your YA reader to see. Enjoy!
