Fair but Not Equal

Bug has a lot going on, so it’s not unusual for he and I to take off on a family dinner night for soccer. When we do we generally grab a milkshake at Brewsters (because they have this White Chocolate Turtle Ice Cream… mmmmm).

Anyway, recently Zany was quite sick and I was so relieved that all really was well after an appointment that we stopped and ate at McDonald’s – smoothies and all.

That evening, Bug noticed my iced coffee cup on the table and said, “Mom, you should take CJ & I to McDonald’s for dinner and not get her anything. That way it’ll be fair.”

I, of course, responded with “You’re right I should. Then we’ll drive up to Brewsters and I’ll buy her 15 or 20 milkshakes and not get you anything so that’s fair, too.”

He had the good grace to look sheepish when he responded, “I guess you’re going to remind me that being part of a family means that fair isn’t equal”.

Okay, well, maybe some things I say get through.

Oh wow. What a great lesson. I love that. Sounds like something I should pass on to my future offspring.

I LOVE that! I used to tell this to my high school students. I wish more people would remember this lesson. You are awesome 🙂
